Teaching

I am Programme Leader on the BA (Hons) Creative Writing course of the Open College of the Arts. In addition I am a Lecturer in Journalism at Leeds Beckett University.

I have extensive experience in teaching creative writing and journalism at Newcastle and Northumbria universities and the University for the Creative Arts.

I can teach general creative writing skills or more niche courses tailored to your needs. My specialisms include crime/suspense fiction, historical fiction, writing for children, writing fantasy and creative non-fiction.
For example, successful courses I recently designed and delivered included Writing Historical Fiction for the Hexham Book Festival, Writing Crime Fiction for Newcastle University and Writing Your Family History for Woodhorn Museum, as well as First Steps in Creative Writing for the Bailiffgate Museum, Alnwick and Berwick Community Centre.
I am experienced in working with groups of children and young people and have a current DBS check. I've also been involved with this innovative online live creative writing session with SchoolHere.

I can teach adults how to write more creatively in business, blog and effectively use social media. Though I am normally available for creative writing mentoring and courses by arrangement - contact me via this site - I am currently not accepting students.

I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and am trained as a 21st Century Author by the National Literacy Trust.

My sessions always receive outstanding feedback. Check out some of these testimonials here.
